China unveils 3-year transport plan
Plans by Chinese officials to boost infrastructure growth and make transport development a "top priority" would create new opportunities for project cargo and breakbulk operators in the country.
China Premier Li Keqiang launched the measures as part of a three-year action plan announced at the country’s recent annual parliamentary meetings.
The new strategy aims to develop at least 50 new airports by 2020 creating significant demand for construction services in the near term. As well as plans for a new airport in Beijing, the government aims to upgrade airports in Harbin, Shenzhen, Kunming, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi’an and Urumqi, turning them into international hubs.
At least 300 projects are to be launched between 2016 and 2018 according to the National Reform and Development Commission. Bloomberg estimates suggest that total fixed asset investment is projected to increase by 10.5 percent this year.
The infrastructure investment would come during the overall slowdown in the Chinese economy in recent months, which has added uncertainty to many large-scale infrastructure project.
